A holiday where three countries meet: from Stolberg to Aachen, Maastricht and the Eifel

Jugendstilvilla Sonnenschein stands on the Büsbacher Berg in Stolberg (Rhineland), in the Aachen city region. Staying in a holiday apartment here means peace and quiet with three countries on your doorstep: Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium meet just half an hour away by car at the three-country point.

Stolberg, the copper town: old town, castle and industrial heritage

Stolberg is known as the “copper town”: for centuries, copper masters and brass works shaped the place. You can still see it in the historic old town with its narrow lanes and copper-master houses, crowned by the medieval Stolberg Castle, the town’s landmark. A stroll up from the Alter Markt to the castle belongs to every visit.

How calamine, copper and brass made world history is told at the Zinkhütter Hof museum: the industrial, economic and social history of the region, vividly presented. A rewarding stop on rainy days too.

Aachen: imperial cathedral, Printen and thermal baths

The villa is around 20 minutes by car from the centre of Aachen. Aachen Cathedral, coronation church of the German kings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the essential stop. Afterwards the old town around the Elisenbrunnen, Aachen Printen gingerbread and the Carolus Thermae baths invite you to warm up and unwind. If you prefer the train, the Euregiobahn connects Stolberg directly with Aachen.

For guests here on business in the Aachen region, whether at RWTH university, the hospital or in industry, the villa makes a quiet base with special rates for longer stays.

Across the border: Maastricht, Vaals and Maasmechelen

That is the appeal of a holiday apartment in the three-country region: two neighbouring countries are within day-trip range. At the three-country point near Vaals you stand with one foot in Germany and the other in the Netherlands. Belgium is a single step away.

Maastricht charms visitors with its old town, the Vrijthof square and Dutch conviviality, about 45 minutes away. Bargain hunters carry on to Belgium and Maasmechelen Village, an outlet village with more than a hundred brand boutiques.

Nature: Eifel National Park and Monschau

The northern Eifel begins just south of Stolberg. The Eifel National Park alone is worth the stay: hiking the Wilderness Trail, boat trips on the Rursee lake. At night it is one of Germany’s few official dark-sky parks, where the Milky Way is still visible to the naked eye.

On the way, Monschau is well worth a stop: winding half-timbered lanes along the river Rur, the historic mustard mill, and an atmospheric Christmas market in winter. Cyclists can pick up the Vennbahn cycle route via Aachen and Kornelimünster, one of the longest railway-line cycle paths in Europe.
